Public advised to keep pets on leash after coyote bites woman: conservation officers

B.C.’s conservation officers have issued a warning to keep your pets on leash when you’re out and about.

The Conservation Officer Service says a woman was bitten by a coyote while out walking with her two small dogs.

It happened just after midnight Thursday morning near Winona Park, which is off Cambie street in South Vancouver.

Four coyotes appeared when the woman let her dogs off their leashes. A coyote grabbed one of her dogs in its mouth and shook it.

As the woman went to rescue the dog, the coyote bit her hand.

Fortunately, people passing by were able to help chase off the coyotes.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.

The dog is expected to survive.

“The public is asked to take precautions in case of coyote encounters, including ensuring pets are leashed and travelling in groups,” the service said on Facebook.

“Conservation Officers will monitor coyote activity in the area and respond as necessary to ensure public safety.”

Anyone who witnesses any coyote conflicts is asked to call the Report All Poachers and polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
