Coyote attacks in Mission leave 6 people hurt

The BC Conservation Officer Service says six people were hurt in various “coyote incidents” in Mission Thursday morning.

According to the agency, all of the people were bitten on the leg by a coyote in four different attacks, which took place between 5:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

It’s unclear how many coyotes were involved in these incidents, but the service says in one case, three people in the same area were bitten.

“The COS has received other reports of aggressive coyotes in these areas. Conservation Officers are working with the City of Mission on public outreach efforts, including signage and patrols,” the service explained in a social media post.

The areas where the attacks were reported include Lark Street, Starling Avenue, River Place, and Raven Avenue.

Despite patrols of these areas, conservation officers say no coyotes were seen.

People around Mission are being asked to take precautions in case of animal encounters. Locals are urged to keep pets on leashes, consider keeping cats inside, travel in groups, and to carry bear spray.

The BCCOS says it will monitor coyote activity in the area “and will respond as necessary to ensure public safety.”
