One arrested after Surrey high rise evacuated

The RCMP has announced an arrest in Surrey that caused the evacuation of the entire building on the weekend.

Mounties say 34-year-old Arandeep Gill was arrested at a high rise on University Drive in Surrey on Sunday evening.

The RCMP says Gill was wanted for eight charges in Surrey including ‘assault with a weapon,’ and three more charges in Langley, but he failed to attend a court date in February.

Police have not yet released details about why the entire building needed to be evacuated, but say their crisis negotiation team, emergency response team, gang team, and their canine unit were called to assist.

Sgt. Chris De Hart of the Surrey RCMP told CityNews it was an incident between two people who know each other. He added that only Gill was arrested, and there were no injuries.

The RCMP said Gill is being held in custody and awaiting a remand hearing.
