Driver critically hurt after object smashes through windshield on Highway 1 in Burnaby

A driver has been critically hurt after a crash on Highway 1 in Burnaby Thursday.

Police were called to the area near the Grandview exit just before 11:30 a.m.

“An unknown object went through the windshield of a white sedan and seriously injured the driver,” explained Corp. Melissa Jongema with BC Highway Patrol. “The driver is in hospital in critical condition.”

It’s unclear what exactly the object was, with police saying they are searching for it along the highway. Jongema says she has information that suggests it was metal.

Police say the driver was the only person in the vehicle.

“ICARS is being consulted and BC Highway Patrol is investigating,” Jongema added.


Traffic delays

The westbound lanes of Highway 1 east of Willingdon Avenue were shut, with delays expected for several hours, but as of 3:55 p.m. Thursday afternoon, DriveBC says the lanes have reopened.

In a post to social media, DriveBC said, “Continue to expect delays and watch for crew in the area.”

You can take Lougheed Highway and Canada Way as alternate routes, though congestion is still expected.
