Kiteboarder dies in Squamish

The District of Squamish has confirmed a person is dead after a kiteboarding incident on Canada Day.
The district says firefighters received a 911 call just after 4 p.m., July 1, that a kiteboarder was hurt at the watersports beach area of Sp’akw’us Feather Park on the Oceanfront Peninsula.
“Despite extensive rescue and resuscitation efforts, the kiteboarder was confirmed deceased at the scene,” the district said in a statement Thursday.
“The District is deeply saddened by this outcome and wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.”
Few details have been shared about what exactly happened. Some posts on social media suggest the kiteboarder was thrown over some rocks after launching, though no official confirmation has been provided. Others have questioned the safety of the launch area, pushing for it to be addressed.
Meanwhile, the district is thanking everyone who tried to help the kiteboarder.
Additionally, officials say on-duty crews with the Squamish Windsport Society were quick to respond, reaching the kiteboarder “within minutes” to begin first aid.
“Appreciation is also extended to the tireless efforts of Squamish Fire Rescue crews and all first responders on scene,” the district added.
Officials say they are working with partners to understand what happened and what can be done following an investigation.
