Woman, child identified as victims in North Vancouver balcony fall; Homicide team called in

The North Vancouver RCMP says homicide investigators are looking into an incident in which a woman and young girl fell from a balcony in the Lower Lonsdale area Tuesday.

Mounties say they responded to reports of the falls at an apartment complex on East Esplanade Avenue around 4:30 a.m.

Officers arrived to find two females suffering from injuries sustained from the fall. Police have now disclosed that the victims were one adult and one “school-aged-child.”

“First responders, including fire and BC Ambulance Service, immediately began lifesaving measures. Sadly, the two females were later pronounced deceased,” the RCMP said.

Mounties say the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the case.

“Police believe the two were known to one another and are not looking for any other suspects at this time,” said Corp. Esther Tupper of IHIT.

“Obviously this tragedy will have affected quite a few people. And so for anybody who wishes to speak to the North Vancouver RCMP victim services: they are available, and they can be reached at 604-969-7540,” Const. Mansoor Sahak of the North Vancouver RCMP told 1130 NewsRadio.

Police say anyone with information regarding the investigation into the falls can call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by emailing ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story reported that the victims fell from a ninth-floor balcony. The North Vancouver RCMP has retracted its statement which provided that information.
