A Boeing 767 cargo jet that skidded off the north runway at Vancouver International Airport Tuesday has been removed, but the runway remains closed, YVR says.
The aircraft — an Amazon PrimeAir jet — reported a “flight control problem” involving a mechanism on its wings used to slow the aircraft just before it skidded off the runway at high speed.
“Teams across several organizations were involved in removing the aircraft, including numerous departments from YVR, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), Cargojet, and the aircraft recovery team provided by Air Canada,” YVR said in a news release.
“After TSB permitted access to the site and the aircraft late in the day on Nov. 20, activities ranged from offloading cargo, constructing temporary roadways and staging pads, setting up cranes to lift the aircraft, and dispatching tow crews to transport it safely to a nearby hangar for cleaning and further inspection.”
The runway will remain closed while the airport assesses systems and infrastructure.
“While flights continue to arrive and depart using the South Runway, we anticipate some impact to flight schedules as we temporarily remain a single runway operation,” YVR said.
A timeline for the return of the runway to service has not been established.
