Black bear killed after lunging at dog in Maple Ridge

A black bear was killed after it attacked a dog in Maple Ridge, the Conservation Officer Service (COS) says.

In a Facebook post, the COS said a man was walking his dog off-leash on a trail near 240th Street when they encountered a bear, which attacked the dog.

“The owner was able to gain control of his dog and attempted to leave when the bear re-engaged,” the service said.

The man was injured as he attempted to defend himself and his pet.

When conservation officers got to the site, they found the bear deceased.

“A COS investigation, which included a sweep of the area, examination of physical evidence, and interviewing the victim, determined the bear was killed in self-defence,” the service said.

“No enforcement action will be taken in relation to this incident.”

The man has received medical attention for his injuries, which are considered non-life-threatening.

“The bear is undergoing a necropsy at an Abbotsford lab to determine any factors that may have affected its behaviour,” the service said.

“The COS reminds the public that despite the season, bears are still active in many areas, where milder temperatures and availability of attractants such as garbage may delay hibernation.”

The public should take precautions in the case of wildlife encounters, the Facebook post said. This includes leashing pets and travelling in groups.
