Vancouver office building evacuated after hazmat exposure

Fire crews say two people were treated by paramedics after reports of a chemical exposure at a Vancouver office building Monday.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) says emergency crews attended the scene on Great Northern Way near Foley Street.

The building was evacuated following an alarm some time after noon. Occupants told CityNews they were asked to wait outside for over an hour while a hazardous materials technician team worked inside.

VFRS Capt. Matt Trudeau says the incident was first reported as a “chemical smell or an exposure.”

“We did have two people, initially, who had an exposure to a chemical,” said Trudeau. “Out of precaution, they were treated with minor exposure by [paramedics], and they’ve been transported to hospital just to get checked over. “

He says hazmat technicians were monitoring and double checking the location of the exposure before allowing people to return to the building.
