Overpass strike causes partial eastbound closures on Highway 1 through Burnaby

A section of Highway 1 is partially closed to eastbound traffic in Burnaby after a commercial vehicle struck the Gilmore Diversion from below Wednesday.

The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says it is on scene investigating the far-right merge lane where the collision happened around noon.

“There is no visible damage to the overpass, and traffic should not be delayed for an extended period,” said BCHP.

Corp. Michael McLaughlin tells 1130 NewsRadio that the strike appears to have been caused by the driver hauling an insecure load.

“This looks to be a load of plywood and lumber that was on a flat deck truck. Some of that lumber was sticking up and hit the overpass,” said McLaughlin.

He says the investigation so far indicates no “obvious issues with criminality,” and nothing to suggest impairment or distraction.

Police say Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement officers will determine next steps.

According to the B.C. government, there has been one other recorded overpass strike in the province this year.

Drivers can expect minor delays and are asked to follow police direction.

“This is mostly isolated to the far right lane, so it’s not interrupting a lot of traffic flow. Hopefully, we’ll get it cleared up fairly quickly, but there will still be minor delays. It’s important people slow down and use caution going eastbound,” said McLaughlin.
