Explosion sound near Abbotsford likely quarry work: police

Abbotsford police say residents shouldn’t be alarmed after some heard what sounded like a big explosion in the McKee Park area Thursday morning.

The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) said the sound was reported before 10 a.m., and “multiple emergency services” went looking for its source.

In an update around 10:40 a.m., the department says it’s on scene at the Sumas Mountain gravel pits.

An AbbyPD post to social media says officers now believe the sound was caused by blasting at one of the nearby quarries on the mountain.

“If the public has any additional information on the source, please contact police.”
