Surrey crews tackle house fire

A section of 72 Avenue in Surrey’s East Newton area closed Wednesday afternoon as crews responded to a house fire.

Callers to 1130 NewsRadio first reported the fire at 72 and 150 Street around 3 p.m. Surrey Fire Department Assistant Chief of Operations Mike McNamara says crews arrived to heavy smoke rising from the roof of a two-storey split-level house.

He says three residents and a pet escaped the home unharmed.

McNamara says it’s too early to tell but the fire may have started in the kitchen and advanced to the ceiling.

He says the fire is contained and the street will reopen in a matter of hours.

“Crews got there quickly and got some water on the fire right away. So the they they got control of it pretty quick. So it’s just a matter of making sure they get all the hot spots done,” said McNamara.
