Downtown Vancouver SRO fire sends resident to hospital with third-degree burns

“Crews arrived and found a suite on fire on the first floor. There was a person trapped inside her suite,” Assistant Chief Jarret Gray told 1130 NewsRadio.

“Our crews went in and grabbed the person from the suite, took them outside. This person did have burns, and fire crews treated the person right away,” Gray added.

“She had third-degree burns on the lower extremities, probably 20 per cent.”

According to Gray, the Howard Johnson is fitted with sprinklers, which helped to knock down the fire inside the suite. Crews were able to fully extinguish the fire, and damage was limited to one suite, he adds.

Fire investigators are on site working to determine the cause of the fire, Gray says.

“This is a case of the person being a hoarder in the room, so right now, our FIS are just investigating the reason why this fire started.”

Gray says as there was limited damage, no other residents from the building have been displaced.
