B.C. Greens, NDP to provide update on cooperation agreement

The governing BC NDP and the B.C. Green Party are expected to provide a quarterly update Tuesday on the legislative support agreement established after a narrowly-won election in November.
Deputy Premier Niki Sharma and interim B.C. Green Leader Jeremy Valeriote will hold a media event in Vancouver to discuss the two parties’ Cooperation and Responsible Government Accord.

The agreement seeks to stabilize Premier David Eby’s slim, one-seat majority with the two B.C. Greens supporting the government, in exchange for specific actions in 12 policy areas, including health care, housing, environment, electoral reform and B.C.’s response to American tariffs.
The accord differs from the confidence-and-supply agreement that the two parties had signed in 2017 because it allows the B.C. Greens to disagree with government in areas not explicitly covered by the accord.
Several disagreements have arisen between the New Democrats and the Greens since last fall’s election, including the government’s decision to axe the consumer carbon tax and Bill 15 — which proposes to speed up public and private infrastructure projects as a response to American tariffs.
In early June, the parties were at odds over the government’s decision to validate a more-than-10-year-old environmental assessment for a new LNG pipeline project.
Valeriote is acting as interim leader for the B.C. Greens, while the party moves toward a leadership race in mid-September.
Sharma and Valeriote are expected to speak at 2:15 p.m.
