Barnet Highway reopens in both directions after earlier crash

The Barnet Highway has fully reopened in both directions after being closed following a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday morning.

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj says officers first responded to the head-on crash near the Suncor oil refinery terminal before 7 a.m.

The highway, which runs the northern edge of the SFU campus connecting Burnaby to Port Moody, was closed westbound from Clarke Street in Port Moody and eastbound from around Cariboo Road.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Kalanj confirmed the highway had reopened in both directions.

Two people — both men, one in his early 30s and the other in his mid-40s — were injured in the collision, he said.

“There was only a driver in each vehicle,” Kalanj said.

“They were both brought to the hospital by [BC] Emergency Health Services in serious but non-life-threatening condition.”

Kalanj says it is early in the investigation, and the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

“We are looking at all aspects. So we’re looking at speed, we’re looking at weather,” he said.

“ICARS [Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service] is on scene, and they’re doing their measurements, and we’re going to try and find that out. We won’t know that probably today, but all those factors are part of our investigation.”
