Drivers advised of detours due to Vancouver BMO Marathon

Vancouver drivers should be advised of detours and road closures ahead of Sunday’s Vancouver BMO Marathon.

Participants are encouraged to use public transit to get to and from the race.

The organizer is also reminding participants to use bus shuttles from selected Lower Mainland locations to get to the start line.

The start line of the marathon and half-marathon is located at Queen Elizabeth Park, and the finish line for both races is on West Pender Street between Bute Street and Thurlow Street.

Residents of Metro Vancouver are reminded that the following bus routes are also affected by the event and have modified schedules on Sunday: 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, 17, 19, 22, 25, 33, 41, 49, 99, 160, 210, 211, 240, 246, C18, C20, and 23.

About 25,000 participants are expected.

In preparation for the race, some Vancouver neighbourhoods already experience closures on Saturday.

According to the organizer, setting up race routes will impact traffic in areas around Riley Park, Coal Harbour, and Downtown, starting as early as 5 p.m.

Closed streets on Saturday and Sunday include:

  • Midlothian Avenue from Dinmont Avenue to Clancy Lorange Way
  • Midlothian Avenue from West 29th Avenue to Ontario Street
  • West Hastings Street – West of Burrard Street, from Burrard Street to Bute Street
  • West Pender Street – from Burrard Street to Bute Street (Denman Street on Sunday)
  • Thurlow Street – from Eveleigh Street to West Cordova Street

Neighbourhoods with closed streets on race day include Riley Park, South Cambie, Oakridge, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Dunbar, UBC, Point Grey, Kitsilano, West End, Coal Harbour, Chinatown, Yaletown, Cambie, False Creek, and Downtown.

The closures are expected to last until 3 p.m. on Sunday near the finish area close to Coal Harbour and 1 p.m. in the rest of the city.
