The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has released the name of the victim of a deadly shooting in Newton early Sunday.
Police were called to the area of 138 Street and 62 Avenue shortly before 12:30 a.m.

Despite intervention by first responders, Deol died at the scene, police say.
Then, around 25 minutes later, police say they received a report of a car fire in the area of 106 Avenue and Salisbury Drive. They found the vehicle, a burnt white Toyota SUV, which they believe was used in the shooting.

IHIT was called in and has taken over the investigation.
The motivation behind the shooting hasn’t been determined, the SPS says, but it appears to have been a targeted incident related to gang activity.
“This is a tremendously difficult time for the victim’s family, and IHIT investigators are working with them to understand his lifestyle and activities leading up to the shooting,” said IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong.
“A lot of work is underway as we continue an extended canvass for witnesses and video at both the shooting and arson scenes.”
Anyone with information or dashcam video from either scene between 10 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
Editor’s note: a previous version of this story had stated the Surrey Police Service had released the image and name of the victim. These were released by IHIT.
