Customers with a reservation are asked to arrive during the check-in window so as not to lose their spots.
“Due to the reduced service, there will be minimal standby space available for those travelling from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay,” the ferry service said in a written statement.
It adds that the repairs of the mechanical issue can take up to ten days, lasting until July 15.
“For those customers travelling on to Powell River on Monday, this reduced service is not expected to impact your ability to travel on the Earls Cove (Sechelt) – Saltery Bay (Powell River) route,” BC Ferries said.
It also says that late-evening sailings were offered on Sunday to accommodate everyone who was travelling.
In an interview with 1130 NewsRadio, Gibsons Mayor Silas White criticized BC Ferries for its lack of communication.
“Unfortunately, BC Ferries was not very proactive in contacting local community leaders. I had to be proactive in reaching out to them,” he said.
The immediate response was limited, and I did get a more substantive response midday about what was going on.”
He says that the Langdale route is “falling through the cracks and not working.”
“It is just becoming more and more urgent and important that the provincial government needs to step in and take some responsibility,” White said.
“We are not considered a route that is an essential daily service for a very dependent community. A lot of those routes have new ferries. They’re not experiencing these systematic failures that we’re experiencing chronically.”
