B.C.’s police watchdog investigating officer-involved shooting in Surrey

B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating in Surrey after a man was seriously injured when officers opened fire during an incident. Angelina Ravelli reports.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it is investigating after an officer-involved shooting that took place Wednesday night.

The IIO says that initial information given by the RCMP’s Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) stated that officers were called out after a report that a distressed man had left a home, located at Melrose Drive near Grovesner Road, with an edged weapon. Officers then searched the area to find the man.

“At approximately 8:02 p.m., the man was located by police near 111A Avenue and Wallace Drive,” the IIO said in a news release Thursday morning.

“There was then an interaction which resulted in a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) deployment and shots being fired by police.”

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, the news release says.

“The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation,” it said.

The BC RCMP says it was initially called out shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Pictures taken in the area show a large police presence in the area. Multiple articles of clothing can be seen scattered on the ground.

The IIO is the civilian oversight agency that is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
