Elderly victims in Vancouver lose more than $300K to Blessing Scams in 2026

It’s a scam targeting elderly Chinese seniors in Vancouver, and it starts with a simple cold approach.
According to investigators, 13 blessing scams have been reported this year alone, with victims losing more than $300,000 in cash, gold and jewelry.
Some losing their entire life savings and cherished family heirlooms. At the same time last year, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) recorded six such incidents.
“We know there are more because the victims we talk to tell us of the deep shame they feel of having been tricked in this way,” says Shiv Gill, VPD Inspector.
Frauds like the blessing, grandparent, and romance scams continue to grow and target vulnerable adults. Preying on the trust of elders across the province, with Seniors First BC sharing that folks should trust their instincts if they feel something is off.
“Be very aware if you’re being pulled into the emotional aspect of things if someone if making you feel very excited or offering a special opportunity, if there’s a threat or if you’re feeling scared or anxious or panicking. Those are all big red flags,” says Linda Yauk, Learning Events and Outreach Coordinator, Seniors First BC.
The VPD says more than half of these blessing scams have occurred in east and southeast Vancouver and believes the con-artists behind these crimes are operating internationally, now liaising with agencies in other countries.
As investigations continue, the VPD warns people to be vigilant and to report any incidents to police.
