Man dead after fleeing traffic stop on foot on HWY 10, Surrey police say

A traffic stop on Highway 10 in Cloverdale turned fatal Thursday evening when the driver got out of the stopped vehicle and tried to run away, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) says.

As the driver was attempting to flee, he was hit by a passing vehicle, police say.

“Despite emergency medical attention from SPS officers, Surrey Fire Service firefighters, and BCEHS paramedics, the driver, an adult male, tragically passed away at the scene of the collision,” Surrey police said.

Officers say the incident unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. Just after midnight, the SPS told CityNews the highway was closed near 156 Street in both directions due to the collision.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, the roadway has been completely reopened in both directions.

Police say the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now investigating.

The IIO — the province’s independent police watchdog agency — is called in to investigate when an officer-involved death or serious injury occurs, whether or not there is any evidence of wrongdoing.
