Robbery at fast-food restaurant in Abbotsford leads to charges

A man has been arrested in connection with a fast-food restaurant robbery that took place in Abbotsford last week.

Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says officers were called to reports of a robbery in progress on Whatcom Road near the Highway 1 exit around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Police learned that a man had entered the restaurant, assaulted an employee and fled with money.

According to AbbyPD, the employee did not suffer any serious injuries.

The suspect was fleeing the scene on a motorcycle and officers attempted to stop the man in the Sumas Prairie area. Police say they called off the pursuit due to the suspect’s reckless driving.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect as 35-year-old Walther De Bruin.

Later that evening, with assistance from the Vancouver Police Department, De Bruin was located and arrested in Burnaby. De Bruin was charged with robbery, disguise with intent, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.
