16-year-old tourist dies at Lynn Canyon

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A 16-year-old from Pennsylvania has died after an outing at North Vancouver’s Lynn Canyon Friday afternoon.

Police tell us at around 4 p.m. they got a call about an unresponsive person at the shores of Twin Falls.

“The youth had swum out into the waters. He attempted to swim back. However, the current was too strong. At that time, the current pulled him underwater and he was underwater for about two minutes before friends and passersby who were able to retrieve him and pull him from the water way,” says North Vancouver RCMP Constable Brett Cunningham.

The teenager was visiting family here in Metro Vancouver.

Park users are warned about the hazards of cliff-diving and swimming in the water.

“The district and the park have cautionary signs that discourage swimming in the waters because of the dangers,” Cunningham points out.

Last year, a 17-year-old from Port Coquitlam died after jumping 50 metres into the water.

The year before, a university student in his early 20s drowned in the park.
