NDP MP facing accusations of harassment

OTTAWA – NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says Saskatchewan MP Erin Weir has been temporarily suspended from his duties amid allegations of harassment.

“This is a troubling allegation that I take very seriously,” says Singh.

“I have spoken with caucus, and we will be appointing an independent investigator to conduct a fair and full examination of the facts available. While that process is ongoing… Weir’s duties as NDP MP will be temporarily suspended.”

Weir will remain a member of the NDP caucus.

“Once the work of the investigator has completed, the MP’s role in caucus will be re-evaluated,” says Singh.

He notes the allegations, contained in an email received by the party, involve “harassing behaviour” towards a female party member. Singh says the concerns were brought forward by another member of parliament.

Singh has not outlined the exact details of the accusations against Weir.

“I’m committed to creating a safe workplace for all, and ensuring that all survivors feel safe to come forward,” says Singh.

Weir denies the allegations.

Weir, 35, a former economist with the United Steelworkers union, was first elected in 2015 in the riding of Regina-Lewvan.
