WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) – Plans to rebuild the White Rock Pier are getting a $1 million boost from the provincial government, but it’s a small part of the overall cost.
It’s estimated repairs will cost around $16.2 million, the lions share of which the City of White Rock will pay for.
A section of the 500 metre landmark was ripped off and other parts were heavily damaged in a wind storm last December.
“The historic White Rock pier is a cultural icon and a significant contributor to the local economy, drawing more than one million visitors to the community each year,” Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon said on behalf of Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Selina Robinson.
“Restoring the pier will help local businesses and improve recreational and cultural opportunities for the community,” he added.
On Thursday, the launch of a fundraising campaign was announced to help with repair costs. Friends of the Pier is trying to raise $2 million.
Construction is set to start this month with plans to reopen the pier by the end of August.
