Hot food banned at Mundy Park as search continues for black bear family

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – Leave the barbecue and any hot food at home if you plan on heading to Coquitlam’s Mundy Park this weekend — they’ve been banned.

A bear and her two cubs are still roaming the large park and the ban will be in place until the bears are moved out. Parts of the park have been closed since Wednesday, when traps were set up in hopes of safely relocating the trio to prevent them from becoming habituated to food sources.

The animals have been seen a number of times and there have been several human-bear conflicts, possibly because of cooking smells.

The ban includes barbecues, camp stoves and anything that smells enticing, including take-out.

“We’d prefer if, for instance, you didn’t bring in a hot pizza, anything that creates aroma,” says Parks Manager Kathleen Reinheimer.

“Signs are going up and we have a whole slew of different staff groups that are keeping an eye out, chatting with people.”

While cold food is still allowed, make sure you take your garbage with you.

“Particularly we wanna pay a lot of attention to making sure that there’s no food waste left around.”
