B.C. shatters single-day record with 4,383 COVID-19 cases

By

For the seventh time this month, B.C. has broken its daily record for new COVID-19 cases with 4,383 infections reported Thursday. The previous record high — 2994 — was reported Wednesday.

The majority of cases continue to be in the Fraser Health region, with 2,319. In Vancouver Coastal there were 977. Interior Health saw 501 new cases, Island Health saw 460, Northern Health saw 122. Four cases have been identified in people who live outside of Canada.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has said the actual number of infections is likely much higher because of hours-long lineups at some testing sites and the extreme cold weather forcing the closure of others.

The number of confirmed Omicron cases is up to 2,845 from 2,452 on Wednesday. Nearly half of those cases, 1,333, are in Vancouver Coastal Health.

One more person has passed away from the virus in the past 24 hours. The number of people in intensive care has not changed, holding steady at 66. In total, there are 211 people in the hospital.

The number of active outbreaks at health-care facilities has almost doubled — up to 13 from 7. The new outbreaks are all in the Fraser health region at Mission Memorial Hospital, New Vista Care Centre, Chartwell Langley Gardens, Chartwell Carlton Gardens, Chartwell Crescent Gardens, and Guildford Seniors Village.

Between Dec. 22 and 28 people not fully vaccinated accounted for 15.8 per cent of cases. Between Dec. 15 and 28, they accounted for 54.7 per cent of hospitalizations.
