Metro Vancouver getting more rain, wind as new storm arrives

The South Coast has been subjected to less-than-ideal spring weather in recent weeks, and now, another storm is on the way.

The Lower Mainland will see strong winds beginning Tuesday night and lasting through into Wednesday. That’s in addition to — you got it — more rain.

“Around Metro Vancouver, 20 to 30 millimetres not out of the question here,” said CityNews Meteorologist Carl Lam, who adds things get a bit more dicey the farther west and north you go.

“That’s where you could pick up 30 to 60 millimetres of rain from this. That’s why special weather statements have been issued,” he explained.

“Everybody will be impacted by this system that makes its way through, whether you’re in Burnaby, over towards Delta, Richmond, West Vancouver, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows — but especially areas on Vancouver Island, closer to the coast, you’re going to be dealing with quite a bit of rain.”

Lam notes the rain will be steady. Drivers are reminded to slow down and turn on their head and tail lights, with the commute likely to be affected Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, wind gusts up to 50 km/h can be expected on parts of the South Coast. For western Vancouver Island, they could hit 110 km/h.

A mid-May snowfall is also likely at higher elevations.

The silver lining is temperatures are expected to become more seasonal as we get into the long weekend.
