‘Could have been far worse’: Charges approved after New Westminster arson

Charges have been approved after gasoline was poured onto a stranger’s porch in New Westminster.
During the evening of May 23, police were called about someone pouring fuel onto their porch.
When officers arrived, police say they spotted a small fire in the grass near the home. The flames were put out.

Soon after, a suspect was taken into custody.
“We’re thankful that the resident was home during the incident as the outcome could have been far worse,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar.
Elsadig Bashir, 29, of Vancouver has been charged with arson and breaching his undertaking.
“If you find yourself in a circumstance where you are fearing for your safety and the safety of your property, call 9-1-1 and our officers will be there,” said Kumar.
