East Van fire deliberately set, spreads to neighbouring building: VFRS

Nobody was hurt when a building in Vancouver was filled with smoke late Sunday night after a dumpster nearby dumpster was set on fire, according to fire crews.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) says the fire was set intentionally and was doused with gas, and the flames then spread to the building at 109 East Hastings.

“The source of the fire was coming from the back of the building,” Capt. Matt Trudeau told CityNews. “A dumpster was fully involved in fire with flames spreading into the back of the structure, up to a window area and into the roof.

“We don’t have any reports of injuries or damage to adjacent structures.”

Trudeau says approximately 14 trucks responded to the call, which came in around 11:19 p.m. He says the crews on the scene acted quickly and helped prevent the fire from causing further damage. However, he says it is concerning that was set intentionally.

Trudeau is reminding people that if you see any smoke or flames, call 911 as quickly as possible.
