One person has died following a shooting in Richmond Sunday morning, the RCMP says.
Police say they were called to the area of Cooney Rd. and Anderson Rd. just before 5 a.m. after reports of shots fired.
On arrival, they found a victim in medical distress, who later died despite attempts to revive them.
The cause of death isn’t clear at this time.
Mounties could be seen searching an area cordoned off by yellow tape on Sunday afternoon.
One person at the scene tells CityNews they called 911 after hearing shots fired at around 4:30 a.m. and someone screaming for help.
Another resident, who lives close by with his family, says he was awoken by the noise.
“Honestly – it just sounded like someone smashing against my door – I could say that it was four-gun shots that I heard,” he said.
“I was sleeping upstairs, and we actually sleep with a noise machine because we have kid, and it was loud enough that it woke me up.”
He says events like this are not common in his neighbourhood.
“Obviously, it’s something no one wants to hear, especially in your own neighbourhood. Hearing about this is unnerving.”
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) tells CityNews they’re working closely with Richmond RCMP throughout this investigation.
“Police are currently in the evidence gathering phase,” RCMP said.
