Vancouver’s Cambie Street Bridge construction, detours, delays to begin this week

The City of Vancouver says the Cambie Street Bridge will undergo construction expected to cause months-long detours and delays, starting this week.

The current six-lane bridge, built in 1985, spans False Creek and connects 2nd Avenue in the city’s Olympic Village to Pacific Boulevard downtown.

The city says “two-way vehicle traffic will be retained across the bridge at all times,” but the number of open lanes will vary as work progresses into spring of 2025.

Bike lanes and sidewalks will also be closed on one side of the bridge at a time. The city says pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers can watch out for signage about current detours and closures.

Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead, expect delays, and use alternate routes.

The city says construction on the Granville Connector will continue over some of the same period, but “traffic measures will be coordinated between the two projects” to minimize the effects.

The construction on the Cambie Street Bridge is described as “structural rehabilitation” work.

“Our bridges are critical infrastructure that facilitate the movement of people and goods in and around Vancouver. Maintaining them regularly is important,” the city said.
