The Burnaby RCMP is asking for the public’s help identifying a man suspected of posing as a bank employee and scamming a senior out of thousands of dollars.
The suspect allegedly convinced the victim he was a bank employee over the phone, collecting passwords and personal details before attempting to withdraw $9,000 in person.
On Sept. 21, 2024, Mounties received a report that the suspect entered a financial institution in South Burnaby and withdrew the money.
“It was later discovered that the suspect had attended four financial institutions across the Lower Mainland between Sept. 21 and 23,” said police in a release Tuesday.
“Of the four attempts, this incident was the only case that the suspect successfully obtained any money.”
Police have also released photos of the suspect’s face, hoping the public can help identify him.
“If you ever receive a call from someone claiming to be from the bank, hang up and call the bank directly,” said Corp. Mike Kalanj.
“Criminals are continually finding new ways to commit fraud, so please take the time to have this conversation with your loved ones.”
Anyone who can help identify the suspect is asked to call the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and quote file number 2024-32632.
