The Surrey Police Service (SPS) has revealed the cause of a large police presence that caused massive headaches for drivers through the Massey Tunnel Saturday.
Police tell 1130 NewsRadio they were called to the area of King George Boulevard near 108th Avenue just before 10:30 a.m. after reports of shots fired.
Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton says the suspect had fled the scene, but an RCMP helicopter was able to pick up the trail of a suspect vehicle.

“Our Surrey Police officers were able to quickly get into the business and review CCTV footage, and they were able to confirm that it was not, in fact, shots fired.”
He says the video showed an individual approaching the window of a business and smashing it several times with a hammer before leaving the scene.

Officers followed a suspect vehicle into the tunnel and eventually made an arrest.
The incident affected traffic for about an hour, with both directions being blocked, before traffic was slowly let through.
Houghton says they had some help from other police departments in the area.
“Anytime an individual crosses a jurisdictional border, in this case, Surrey, into Delta, into Richmond, all of the police agencies get involved,” he said.
No injuries were reported, he says.
