Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, a Movember fundraiser, celebrates 15th anniversary

Hundreds of motorcyclists will be riding around Vancouver this weekend for a good cause. The 15th annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride raises money for Movember, the annual moustache-growing fundraiser for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.

“The distinguished gentleman’s ride is the funnest ride,” said Eric Hendrikx, a longtime participant.

“Everyone gets dressed up dapper. They ride on classic motorcycles. It’s sort of a parade in downtown in over 1,100 cities around the world. And so, in Canada, you’ll see a great activity. It’s a great ride everywhere. It’s a great ride in Vancouver.”

Hendrikx points out the ride has raised $63 million in Canada alone.

“All of the money, 100 per cent of the funds, are directed straight through to Movember from DGR. And so, all the funds go right to the charities. They go straight to on-the-ground programs. There are programs for first responders. There are programs for prostate cancer initiatives. There’s a whole slew of great programs that they vet for people.”

Hendrikx himself has raised more than $100,000 for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

“I mean, for me, I feel like I can always do more. So, I will just continue to strive to do as much as I possibly can. The motorcycles and the motorcycle community have given me so much over the years, from camaraderie to friendships to these great bonds and opportunities to work together for a great cause. So, I’m always trying to do as much as I can.”

“I’ve been a motorcyclist since my dad could pop a helmet over my head and set me on his 1978 Yamaha Enduro and go ride in the hills. When I found out that there was a charity ride for motorcyclists that was also supporting prostate cancer and men’s mental health initiatives, it just felt like there was an equation there that I could relate to.”

“You know, we all have known people and suffered loss from suicides, from prostate cancer, from mental health issues and concerns. We’ve, a lot of us have dealt with mental health issues. And so, it’s something that’s just very near and dear to my heart. And I’m happy to support and contribute any way I can.”

The Vancouver edition of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the City Centre Artist Lodge, the former City Centre Motor Hotel, in Mount Pleasant. Head to gentlemansride.com to find out more.
