55-year-old dies of possible drowning in Chilliwack

The Chilliwack RCMP is confirming a 55-year-old man died Friday after a possible drowning at the Vedder River, near Peach Park.

Staff Sgt. Layne Penner says while details are still yet to be confirmed, the incident happened around 3:30 p.m.

How the man ended up in the river is still unclear, he says.

“He was possibly fishing, and possibly attempted to rescue his dog, that fell into the river,” Penner told CityNews.

Penner notes the BC Coroners Service has taken over the investigation and will determine the man’s exact cause of death.

“Be safe on the water,” Penner said. “That’s the only message we [have].”

The possible drowning comes as a two-year-old nearly drowned at Cultus Lake at the beginning of June, and a missing persons investigation is underway after a person went missing earlier this month at Cultus Lake.
