Bug bite sends woman to hospital

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They may seem like harmless house pests, but a bug bite sent one Vancouver woman to the emergency room. Doreen Boyle woke up and noticed the bite right away. “By my wrist, it just had a little bite there and I was scratching and kept scratching then it started to burn and get really red, and then the redness started to move up my arm.

Doreen had to go to the emergency room, where she was given antibiotics intravenously for two days. Doctors don’t know what kind of bug bite she had, but suspect it was a spider.

While in the emergency room, Doreen was sitting next to another woman who had also been admitted for a spider bite and was in even worse shape than she. “Her leg looked like it was burned by an exhaust pipe and she said no it was a spider. I asked her how old her bite was and she said two days. It was very nasty.” That woman was also receiving antibiotics intravenously.

Tony from Pest Detective point out that all spiders have venom, and what might cause one person to react might cause no problems for another.

So has this made Doreen even more wary of bugs in her home? “I was never a bug lover anyway.”
