OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – There are even more calls to reform Canada’s pardon system this morning, thanks to new numbers out from the National Parole Board.
More than 1,500 sex offenders have had their criminal records wiped clean in the last two years. The numbers are surprising given the fact the pardons happened under the watch of the Harper Conservatives who had promised to make the system tougher.
Of the 1,554 sex offenders who applied for a pardon in the last two years, only 41 were refused. That works out to a 2.6 per cent rejection rate, one that isn’t that much higher than regular criminals applying for pardons.
The news is likely to add fuel to the fire of pardon reform. Over the Easter weekend came word former junior hockey coach Graham James was pardoned in 2007.
