Woman key to the case against Pickton passes away

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Just as the Supreme Court of Canada decides whether to grant Robert Pickton a second trial, the Crown has lost a key witness.

She was once a longtime friend of the serial killer, but Gina Houston ended up being part of the case against Pickton.  Houston died last week in hospital after a 8-year-long battle with breast cancer at the age of 42.

She was one of five star crown witnesses after spending time on Pickton’s pig farm in Port Coquitlam.  The mother of three took the stand in 2007 but even then was suffering from her condition, having her testimony moved up and needing to take frequent breaks due to fatigue.

With a second trial a possibility, there are provisions to allow her previous testimony to be read into evidence at any future trial.
