NDP: Broken promise over toll free bridges

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The NDP claims the provincial government has broken its promise to provide practical, toll free crossings when it builds a toll bridge.  Now, the B.C. Trucking Association is worried about it too.

The Association’s president Paul Landry says in some cases, like the Golden Ears Bridge, truckers don’t mind paying a toll because the bridge saves them time and fuel.

However, once tolls go on the twinned Port Mann Bridge and the proposed Pattullo Bridge, the only other free bridge would be the Alex Fraser, forcing people in Surrey to drive kilometres out of their way to get to places like Port Coquitlam.

Landry says not only are truckers worried about that, he also feels the pain average commuters would face.  “I think that creates a problem in comparison with other workers who are crossing the Fraser at another point like the Alex Fraser Bridge.”

He adds while truckers might be able to recover some of the cost of a toll, average commuters can not.
