BC Ferries booking up for the May long weekend

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As we head into the first long weekend of summer travel season, BC Ferries are already booking up, and the Southern Gulf Islands run out of Tsawwassen is already full today. We’re looking at what BC Ferry Services is and isn’t doing, to help ease the summer crunch on that run.

BC Ferries says long weekends can book up on the Tsawwassen/Southern Gulf Islands run three weeks before a long weekend and two weeks before a regular summer weekend.

Deborah Marshall says experienced travellers know the drill. The route is 100 per cent reservable – they book weeks and sometimes the entire summer in advance, leaving last minute travellers high and dry.

So are there plans to add extra capacity to the run? “We do add extra capacity starting at the end of June, we add a second vessel but keeping in mind this route loses $8-million a year. Might be very peaky on the weekends, it’s certainly not that way Monday to Thursday.”

She says the alternative for travellers is to sail to Victoria and then to the Gulf Islands from that side, adding time and expense to the trip. You can keep up to date with ferry sailings through here.
