Full day kindergarten starts next week in B.C.

VANCOUVER (News1130) – The move into kindergarten is a big transition for pre-schoolers and parents are split on whether the expansion to full day kindergarten this year will help or hinder their little students.

Full day kindergarten is expanding to about half of B.C.’s schools on Tuesday and it will cover all five year-old’s by next September.

Many parents are worried a full school day is just too much for kids that young but Education Minister Margaret Macdiarmid says it’s flexible.

She tells The Province newspaper any parent who wants to opt out and send their children for a half day can do so and that it is not mandatory.

Some experts say full-day kindergarten results in higher achievements in later grades and children who are more developmentally competent and who get less frustrated. Opponents believe kids are being thrown into the school system too early.
