VANCOUVER ISLAND (NEWS1130) – A powerful rocket launcher has been discovered along the Malahat Highway, near Shawnigan Lake, on Vancouver Island.
RCMP say the self propelled launcher was loaded when it was found in dense bush by a tree clearing contractor.
One of the officers, a Canadian Forces veteran and who served two tours in Afghanistan, recognized the weapon to be a M72, loaded with what appeared to be one live rocket grenade in the tube.
The bomb squad was called out and safely removed the weapon. Police believe the rocket launcher may have been there for six months or longer.
