VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been a busy morning for firefighters in Vancouver and Burnaby. Crews were called to a fireworks store at Venables Street and McLean Drive around 6 a.m. to deal with the two-alarm fire.
The concern for firefighters was clearly for the explosives, but the store also serves as a garden centre and there was a possibility of flammable fertilizer inside.
One home behind the structure was evacuated. The extent of damage has yet to be determined and it’s unclear if anyone was injured.
Homeless in Surrey
A late night fire has destroyed a Surrey home on 87B Avenue near Tulsy Crescent. Early reports suggest a pumpkin with a candle inside tipped over and may be to blame.
Luckily no one was hurt but the family is now homeless.
Several hurt after fire in Burnaby
Crews have wrapped up their efforts after an early morning fire at a high-rise apartment building on Kingsway just west of Edmonds Street in Burnaby. Evacuees have been let back in after being forced out around 3 a.m.
Three people were hurt in the blaze, another person is in critical condition, but it was unrelated to the fire.
No word on what caused the flames. Roughly a dozen ambulances were on scene at one point, but emergency crews have now moved on the investigation phase.
Fire damage extensive
In just one hour last night over 10 fires were set in Vancouver costing over $200,000 worth of damage.
Fire Captain Gabe Roder says schools were targeted. “Henderson School Annex, Walter Moberly and Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary were all schools that were targeted by irresponsible individuals using fireworks. They were blasting fireworks any way they could through the windows.”
Roder says most of calls came from Southeast Vancouver. The Vancouver School Board says all schools in the city will remain open.
