VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s the last chance for parents and students to make their case to save Queen Alexandra Elementary. There is a plan to save the school that will be presented to the Vancouver School Board tonight.
Right now, the school only runs at 57 per cent capacity, making it one of five elementary schools short-listed for closure so the board can meet its crushing $17 million budget shortfall.
The proposal to turn Queen Alexandra into a fine arts school would drive up enrolment, as the only other school with such a program in the city has a sizeable waiting list.
The school’s Parent Advisory Committee co-chair Renita Fernandez says there has to be a solution. “It’s such a waste to let 101 or 102 years of history go away and we are providing this solution. We just need a chance for the school board to have us run with this idea.”
That idea will be presented tonight at the final public meeting to discuss Queen Alexandra’s fate. The meeting is at Vancouver Technical Secondary at 2600 East Broadway.
Kids dealing with emotional issues
We might be better educated, but we still have some work to do when it comes to social and emotional development.
There has been a small increase in the number of Canadians attending university and across most of the country student-to-teacher ratios have slightly improved. But that’s not the case in BC.
While we might be more educated than ever, the report released by the Canadian Index of Wellbeing found children are not any better prepared to deal with social and emotional issues like bullying and self esteem than they were 14 years ago.
