David Lam dies

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Dr. David Lam, a former BC lieutenant-governor, has died after a battle with prostate cancer.

He was considered an immigrant success story.

Born in Hong Kong, Lam came to Canada in 1967, founded his own investment firm and then turned to philanthropy, with major financial gifts to universities and community projects.

He was appointed lieutenant-governor in 1988 and served until 1995.

Tung Chan, the former CEO of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. immigration group, says Lam was unfailingly generous.

“Without me asking, [Lam] came to me and said, ‘Tung, as the new CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., you must have your vision, your ideas and programs you want to implement.’  So he said, ‘Why don’t I just cut you a cheque from my personal foundation for $100,000?’  So that’s what he did.'”

Premier Gordon Campbell issued a statement saying the province is mourning the loss of a great British Columbian and great Canadian.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday in Richmond.  Lam was 87.
