VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Taxpayers may get a sinking feeling hearing how much BC Ferries employees are reeling in.
Newly released documents show 21 people earned more than $200,000 last year, while President David Hahn got a check for nearly $1 million. The company also reveals nearly half of its 4,200 employees earned more than $75,000 last year.
The data was posted online to fulfill its Freedom of Information obligations, which the province compelled the quasi-private company to follow starting in October.
On the streets of Metro Vancouver, there are a lot of folks who love to hate the breakdowns, service disruptions and other inconveniences we sometimes see on the system; it’s almost a West Coast hobby. “It seems like a lot to me,” one woman muses, but others say people have to make a living wage.
A frequent traveler figures you get what you pay for. “To bring in top executives, you gotta pay them what a top executive gets. Whether they’ve got good top executives is another question.”
We have calls in to BC Ferries and are waiting for further comment on the salaries.
