VPD and VSB team up to warn teens about date rape

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The dangers of date rape are the focus of a joint program at Vancouver high schools by the VPD and the School Board.

The program will be delivered in three in-class sessions to grade 10 students, starting immediately. They focus on the meaning of consent, but aren’t just intended for victims. Police say it’s to prevent future attackers, too.

Detective Constable Denise Foster says too many sex assaults like these are going unreported. “They may even start innocently enough at a party, a bar, or a nightclub. But the attack will most likely happen outside, in a hotel, or in a car. The victim who is assaulted will probably be known to the assailant.”

The program has been in the works since 2008. Teachers want it in class, saying it’s important to openly discuss the dangers.
