Vigil held for farm workers killed in 2007’s van crash

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A sad anniversary is being marked in Abbotsford this evening. It was four years ago that three farm workers lost their lives in a horrible van accident.

A candle light vigil at Abbotsford City Hall has drawn family and friends of the three women who were killed that March morning.

Jagjeet Sidhu lost his wife in the accident. He still wonders why criminal charges weren’t laid. “The RCMP recommended 33 criminal charges… This is not justice.”

A coroner’s jury report made 18 recommendations, but NDP Interim leader Dawn Black, who addressed the crowd, says government action so far has been inadequate.

“The issue around the inspection vehicles, particularly the 15-passenger vans, the recommendation stated that the repairs must be separated from the inspection facility.”

Black says farm workers need to be once again fully protected under the Employment Standards Act.
