VCC students spend two weeks making Vancouver’s birthday cake

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You can thank the Vancouver Community College’s Nancy McRae, teaching assistants, and her 15 baking students for the incredible lemon cake served up for Vancouver’s 125th birthday.

It was served up to thousands of eagerly waiting patrons at celebrations tonight, taking place near the Olympic Cauldron in Downtown Vancouver. In total, there were three enormous cakes.

“The cakes are made with jelly roll. There are seven and a half cakes on each slab,” says MacRae.

The centrepiece was a giant cake that looked like the city of Vancouver, with landmarks made out of Rice Krispies shaped into the Vancouver Art Gallery, the downtown library, the former BC Place Stadium, City Hall, Lions’ Gate Bridge, Harbour Tower, and many others.

McRae had her favourites, though. “I actually like the library and  the convention centre. I think they did a wonderful job with it. The detail in it is incredible.”

It’s the first time her class has undertaken such an enormous project. Student David Arsenault who’s in the 10-month baking program says he and other students virtually lived at school for weeks while they were making the dessert.

He says they transported the main parts by delivery truck, but for the actual buildings, they gently packed them into boxes and took them in cabs to the event.
